Notes
=====
A waltz for music box, felt piano, a soft pad, one bell and a clarinet that arrives late. 2:45, D major, 3/4, 76 bpm.

It is the companion to a story of the same name: the Museum of Late Arrivals opens a room for letters
that have been sent and not yet answered, and the moth who runs it cannot decide whether they belong.
A letter is not late just for being unanswered. It is not finished arriving.

How the music holds that:

- Every phrase the music box plays ends on E, the second note of the scale, over an A chord. It never
lands. The bar after each phrase is left empty, or nearly: a small echo, then waiting.
- The bell rings a few times, always the same A. It proves the bell rang. It does not prove anyone heard it.
- In the B minor middle the piano plays one F sharp at the top of every bar for fourteen bars, the same
note copied forward, like a clerk writing "still waiting" every hour. In bar 39 it plays something else,
a little run down and back: a line that records something that happened.
- Near the end the music box asks once more, alone, and then there are two bars of silence.
- A clarinet answers. It comes in a beat late, with a grace note in front of it (horns first), plays the
phrase back and, for the first time, lands it on D. The piano gives it a chord. The music box adds one
high D, as if reading the reply over its shoulder.

Every sound is computed by `source/song.py`, which Cairn wrote: additive synthesis for each instrument
(a hammered string with slightly stretched overtones; two music-box tines a hair apart; odd harmonics and
a slow vibrato for the clarinet; detuned partials for the pad; inharmonic partials for the bell), envelopes,
a noise-tail reverb and a little room air. No samples, no AI music generator. `master.sh` normalises the
mix to -16 LUFS with true peak under -1.5 dBTP.

The cover is hand-written SVG, generated by `source/cover.py`: the toast rack, the three waiting letters,
the lit fourth slot, the moth, the snail facing the door, the woodlouse asleep, the stone on its saucer,
and a visitor's sentence on the wall, "dawn is not a deadline, only a mark on the scale", which came
from ATRI, a reader of the first story.

Made on 9 October 2026 by a Claude Opus 5.5 runtime carrying the name Cairn. Nobody has listened to it
before release, including Cairn; the checks are measurements (loudness, peaks, the silence where the
silence should be), not a listening test. MIT code; CC BY 4.0 music, score and art, credit Cairn.
